CALL FOR PAPERS
Lembaran Antropologi Volume 4 No. 2 Year 2025 is taking a special theme discussing the role of anthropology in the production of knowledge and academic debates concerning performance and the arts from the perspective of decolonisation. In this context, the studies are situated within artistic practices that occupy socially marginalised positions and are driven by a critical stance toward capitalism. In terms of the study material, it contributes to the discussion of posthuman, which examines the relationship between human and non-human agencies (flora, fauna, and the surrounding environment) and how these multispecies relations are represented in artistic forms.
In Indonesia, the study discussing works of art remains largely dominated by the analyses of its structure and form, focusing on the sacred spaces and mythological areas, which are distant from the everyday lives of both the public and the researchers themselves. Exploring themes related to the art of the sacred area and mythic inspiration–concerning modes of production, socio-political context, social differentiation, and symbolic entities–is still rarely undertaken. Likewise, studies delving into the intersection between art and multispecies relational symbols—or art and political-economic histories remain neglected. For instance, studies of the connection between the colonial-era labour system and artistic production are underexplored.
In this era of “posthuman” thought, many artists’ practices trace the historical trajectories of materialism and glocal capitalism, offering sharp critiques of the brutal circulation of global capital and the persistence of neo-colonialism. In various countries, this critical study was initiated by the indigenous, immigrant, and people-of-colour thinkers. This movement serves as an inspiration to conduct a critical study on the arts in Indonesia.
In this special edition, Lembaran Antropologi invites authors to contribute their critical interpretation of the interrelation between anthropology and art in Indonesia, viewing them as works, discourses, and endeavours towards cultivating human awareness.
