The Department of Anthropology, FIB UGM, is pleased to offer a new interdisciplinary course for the upcoming semester:
“Climate Change Adaptation & Social Justice in Indonesia”, taught by Prof. Dr. Sabine Tröger, Visiting Professor from the University of Bonn, Germany.
This course critically explores how communities adapt to the dual forces of climate change and modernization, particularly in Java’s diverse and vulnerable socio-ecological landscapes. Students will examine the intersection of environmental transformation and social justice using theoretical frameworks and participatory field research.
🔍 Course Overview

Focus: Adaptation to climate change, empowerment/disempowerment processes, and the pursuit of social justice.

Methodology: Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) based on Robert Chambers’ approach.

Fieldwork: Applied empirical research in Gunung Kidul, exploring real-world responses to ecological challenges.
This class combines academic inquiry and field engagement, and is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The course begins with two weeks of intensive seminars (theory, methods, research design), followed by four weeks of combined classroom and fieldwork activities. The final meeting will focus on data analysis and reflection on climate-related social transformation.
