Workshop Announcement: Archives of Ethnographic Encounters

The Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Cultural Sciences UGM, invites Master’s and Doctoral students of Anthropology to join the workshop “Archives of Ethnographic Encounters.” This workshop offers a space for reflecting on the multitemporal dimension of ethnography, especially through the use of creative methods such as photography, video making, sound recording, and creative writing.

The workshop expands our understanding of what constitutes an archive and encourages participants to consider the ethical implications of working with materials gathered by others—be they researchers or interlocutors. How do we define an archive? Are we all constantly producing materials that may one day become historical documents? What responsibilities arise when dealing with materials that were once personal or intimate? And how should we engage with these materials when they circulate in new contexts?

🗓 Date: Thursday, 28 August 2025
⏰ Time: 10.00–14.00 WIB
📍 Venue: Margono Building, Multimedia Room, 2nd Floor, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM
