“Making Knowledge, Making History: Producing the Indonesian Past, Present and Future” 

May 26-30, 2026 (Virtual)

The American Institute for Indonesian Studies (AIFIS) and Michigan State University (MSU) Asian Studies Center will convene the 6th annual AIFIS-MSU Conference on Indonesian Studies from May 26-30, 2026. Presented in a bilingual and virtual format, the conference is designed to bring together scholars working across geographic and disciplinary frameworks to explore the evolving field of area studies research in Indonesia.

This year’s conference theme, “Making Knowledge, Making History: Producing the Indonesian Past, Present and Future,” invites scholars, students, artists, and practitioners to explore how Indonesia has been imagined, studied, and narrated across time.

The Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) will hold the Master’s Thesis Proposal Seminar (Sempro) in Anthropology for the Odd Semester of the Academic Year 2025/2026.

📍 Venue: Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada

Requirements

  1. Active master’s student in the Odd Semester 2025/2026.

  2. Completed or passed courses equivalent to 15–16 credits (SKS) with a minimum GPA of 2.50.

Required Documents

  1. Thesis proposal manuscript (docx/pdf) with the following criteria:

    • Written in proper and formal academic language.

    • Must include background, research questions, methodology, and literature review.

    • Maximum length: 5,000 words.

  2. Academic Transcript/Latest Study Report (pdf).*

  3. Proof of Tuition Fee Payment (pdf/jpg/jpeg).*

  4. Latest Course Registration (KRS) (pdf).*

  1. Active undergraduate student in the Odd Semester 2025/2026.

  2. Completed at least 120 credits (SKS) with a minimum GPA of 2.00.

  3. Passed the courses Ethnographic Research Methods and Ethnographic Research Practice (minimum grade C).

Required Documents

  1. Thesis proposal manuscript (docx/pdf) with the following criteria:

    • Written in proper and formal academic language.

    • Includes background, research questions, methodology, and literature review.

    • Maximum length: 3,500 words.

The Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Cultural Sciences UGM, invites Master’s and Doctoral students of Anthropology to join the workshop “Archives of Ethnographic Encounters.” This workshop offers a space for reflecting on the multitemporal dimension of ethnography, especially through the use of creative methods such as photography, video making, sound recording, and creative writing.

The workshop expands our understanding of what constitutes an archive and encourages participants to consider the ethical implications of working with materials gathered by others—be they researchers or interlocutors.
