Profil

Prof. Dr. Pujo Semedi is a teaching staff and Head of the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). He obtained his bachelor's degree from Universitas Gadjah Mada in 1989, his graduate title (M.A.) degree from The Ateneo de Manila University, the Philippines in 1991, and his Ph.D. from Universiteit van Amsterdam, the Netherlands in 2001. In 2012 to 2017 he become the Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences UGM. On several occasions, he was invited to become a visiting professor at the Department of Anthropology at the University of Toronto (2010-2012) and the Institute for Ethnology at the University of Heidelberg (2014). The focus of his research is related to the themes of fishing, agriculture, and plantation communities and tourism. Currently, he is conducting a research project on the Petungkriyono highland farming community and the North Coast fishing community in Central Java, which began in the 1980s until now. The ethnographic work he produced was, for instance, "historical ethnography", in which he combined the research method of participating-observations from the anthropology and the study of archives and literature from the history. Some studies that have been conducted include Production of Wealth and Poverty in New Indonesian Rural Economies (2010-2012) in collaboration with the University of Toronto, Canada; In Search of Balance: Indonesian Welfare Regime between State, Private Sector and Civil Society (2012-2017) in collaboration with Universitetet i Agder, Norway; Indonesian New Economic Frontier (2013-2017) collaborated with Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, the Netherlands.
