Joint Degree Programme, UGM-Leiden University

The Joint Degree Programme between Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Indonesia, and Leiden University, the Netherlands, offers students a unique opportunity to undertake advanced academic training at two leading institutions in anthropology. Designed to foster global academic collaboration, this programme prepares graduates for international research and professional careers in the field.

Students admitted to the programme will spend one academic year at Universitas Gadjah Mada and one academic year at Leiden University, allowing them to gain comparative perspectives and in-depth exposure to diverse socio-cultural contexts. Through this joint arrangement, participants will strengthen their grounding in anthropological theory, ethnographic research methods, and cross-cultural analysis.

Upon successful completion of the programme, students will be awarded two academic certificates, one from Universitas Gadjah Mada and one from Leiden University. The Leiden University component follows the MA programme in Anthropology with specialisations in Global Ethnography, Visual Ethnography, and Ethnographic Fieldwork (60 EC). Applicants are required to demonstrate strong English proficiency, with recognised qualifications such as IELTS, TOEFL, or equivalent certifications.

The programme is open to applicants for the Academic Year 2026/2027. Admission involves separate application procedures to Universitas Gadjah Mada and Leiden University, following each institution’s standard requirements. Applicants may also apply for funding through the LPDP Double Degree/Joint Degree scholarship scheme, subject to eligibility and scholarship regulations.

For detailed information on application procedures, admission requirements, and timelines, prospective students are encouraged to consult the official university and scholarship websites.
