Training in Didactics Combined with Steps and Interpretations in Line with The Participatory Approach and Methodology – Aiming at ‘Empowerment’
Prof. Dr. Sabine Tröger, Visiting Professor at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) from August 2024 until July 2026, offers a training in didactics combined with steps and interpretations aligned with the participatory approach and methodology—aiming at empowerment. This program is offered under the invitation of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences/Institute of Anthropology and is supported by DAAD, the German Academic Exchange Service. The training is targeted toward lecturers at institutes of Anthropology and the broader field of Social Sciences, focusing on approaches and methods for effective university-level teaching.
Prof. Tröger brings an extensive professional background to this training. She holds a Venia Legendi, the obligatory academic qualification for professorships in Germany, in the field of Didactics. With over 20 years of research, university cooperation, and consultancy experience on development and environment-related topics—particularly Climate Change and Societal Justice—in Africa, she also served as Professor of Development Geography and Social Geography at Bonn University for 22 years.
The goal of the training is to establish a solid foundation in academic teaching that integrates both theory and agency orientation. It is designed to improve lecturers’ teaching techniques with an aim toward empowerment—benefiting not only the lecturers themselves but also their students, who are ultimately expected to become professionals working with or within Indigenous Communities. A significant component of the course includes methods and procedures for field research and activities classified as community service, both formally and in terms of students’ future professional development.
At the heart of the training is the Participatory Approach (PRA), emphasizing Participation, Reflection, and Action. The course is recognized as a lecturer training program in didactics and will result in the awarding of a certificate on didactics by the Department of Anthropology at UGM and in the name of Bonn University, Germany.
The training is scheduled to be held after the semester ends (February–June 2025), specifically from June 23 (starting at lunchtime) to June 27 (ending at lunchtime), 2025, and will be facilitated on-site at UGM in Yogyakarta. In accordance with the agreement between DAAD and FIB/UGM, there will be no financial contribution or allowance required from participants. Lunch will be provided on training days. However, the organizer does not cover hotel accommodation or transportation during the activity. Efforts will be made to help participants find affordable accommodation, but no guarantees can be provided.
Registration is simple and open to all interested lecturers—no specific requirements are necessary. Participants are encouraged to register directly with Prof. Dr. Sabine Tröger via WhatsApp at +49 175 656 1428 or email at stroeger@ugm.ac.id.
